PLAYING EXTRA MAPS : CREATING EXTRA MAPS

PLAYING EXTRA MAPS - To play an extra map you have downloaded from the internet or whatever you will need to follow these steps : -

STEP 1 Within your "QUAKE" folder there is another called "ID1" inside that folder create another one called "MAPS" (this name is important dont use another one)

STEP 2 All called map files are *.BSP (they all end with BSP), place the BSP file into the new "MAPS" folder.

STEP 3 Launch Quake, once it is running pull down the console using the ¬ key (top left hand corner of the keyboard) and type : - MAP XXXXXXXX.BSP - Press return and Quake will load the new map (XXXXXXXX.BSP being the name of the map file you have downloaded)

CREATING EXTRA MAPS - As already mentioned it is possible to make and play extra maps for the quake game, to make these maps you need an editor. The three best ones i know of are (I wont get any further into this because it would take hours, trial and error my friend): -

THRED	All in all a good editor, but once you get beyond newbie and want to create more complex maps, it get difficult, and the help files aint to good. Although i do believe you can get help from the thred hompage, and also the message boards at stomped
WORLDCRAFT	I have been told that this is an excellent editor, but i am sorry to say that I dont know anything about it. Suffice to say that I downloaded the file and ran it, after 5 minutes I deleted it because I wasnt getting anywhere
DEATHMATCH MAKER	Now this is the business an excellent editor that gives you some good utilities like being able to view your map as it is built with textures and all, without having to convert it to a Quake format. This function alone gives this package my top marks (you can download a demo, that has various functions disabled) the full version costs about $30/£18
